On June 16, 2020, the video forum "University Education for Sustainable Development: European Trends and Russian Reality" was attended by teachers, staff, and students of MIIGAiK, IrSTU, NOSU, MIPT, SPbSU, GUAP as well as the head of the program "Green HEIs of Russia".
In the first part of the video forum, the results of the implementation of the international project ERUSMUS+ Jean Monnet Module “Green Terra Development” (GRETERE) in MIIGAiK in 2019 – 2020 were presented. Actually, the methodology for developing a professional interdisciplinary module integrated the principles of sustainable development for the training of undergraduates and bachelors in University education. MIIGAiK teachers who participated in the project shared the results of their research and pedagogical observations to forum participants, discussed the results of the project second year and the prospects for its further development.
In the second part of the video forum, the program "Green HEIs of Russia" was presented, which already unites 100 universities and continues to gain energy, as well as successful projects of eco-volunteer centers in Russian universities - IrSTU, NOSU, MIPT, SPbSU, GUAP.

Dr. Galina Kuznetsova (Associate Professor of the Department of Space Monitoring and Environment, Director of international projects, GRETERE project coordinator) presented a methodology for the development and implementation of the interdisciplinary module "Sustainable Territory Development", which was developed in the project and on the recommendation of the Methodological Council of MIIGAiK Humanitarian Faculty is included in the basic educational program of undergraduates in training 07.04.01 "Architecture" (specialization "Architecture and urbanism").
Ms.Karina Khachatryan (associate Professor of Architectural Design Department member of the Board for professional qualifications in the field of engineering survey, town planning, architectural design) presented the results of mastering the professional content by students and their own insights of research and diploma projects in the context of sustainable development.
Dr.Viktor Belenko (Associate Professor of the Department of Space Monitoring and Environment) and Dr.Sergey Serebryakov (General Director of JSC "Operator of Spatial Data and Services", who participated in the project as an external expert with extensive practical experience) presented the results of their observations in the course of working with students in the discipline " Space Monitoring of Landscapes. Digitalization&GeoData".
Ms.Elena Snezhinskaya, the senior lecturer in Land Management and Territory Development Development of the Faculty of Territory development shared the results of psychological-pedagogical studies on the ecological consciousness formation of bachelor students, which were realized during the piloting of some topics of the module on this education level.
Dr.Marek Frankovich, Professor at the Jagiellonian University in Cracow (Poland), gave a brief overview of European trends and challenges in implementing the principles of sustainable development in University education, spoke about the positive experience of Iceland and Australia, as well as the state of this issue in Poland.
It was very interesting and no less useful to get acquainted with the best Russian practices of volunteer university eco-clubs. Invited guests from IrSTU, NOSU, MIPT, SPbSU, GUAP presented their student green clubs and projects.
Irina Tikhonova, the head of the all-Russian program "Green HEIs of Russia» the coordinator of the same name rating introduced the forum participants to the variety of environmental programs and projects that are widely being implemented in Russia at the university level. It was nice to note that the program already unites 100 universities under the auspices of the Russian Association of Green Universities and continues to gain energy.
Dr.Sergey Polishchuk, associate Professor of IrSTU, told about the environmental projects of his team with the" bomb " name КПСС, which they have realized on lake Baikal territory actively interacting with local NGOs, foundations, and business organizations. Sergey emphasized (from his experience) that environmental volunteerism is an effective form of Patriotic education of a specialist.
Lara Zaboleva, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development NOSU (Vladikavkaz), shared her experience of institutionalizing the principles of sustainable development through the organization of a student volunteers team at her University.
Yevgenia Bobrenkova, head of the Environmental Association of MIPT students Green.tech told about the experience of MIPT students in organizing RST events and regular separate waste collection, persuading the administration and organizations related to MIPT to do their work with greater care for Nature.
Alexey Dautov (Director of innovation development MIIGAiK) presented the EcoHack project, which received an environmental coloring just this year, but has a 3-year background of successful organization of hackathons with a focus on GIS, cartography, geodesy knowledge and skills. Ecohakaton took place online this year in the conditions of coronavirus but nevertheless quite successfully because let the far region teams join the 3 days contest without significant material and time travel costs.
Many questions arose during the forum and after it the participants continued to discuss emerging ideas for future joint projects, including international ones.
We hope that the forum will give an impetus to inter-University cooperation in the field of promotion and further development of the sustainable development principles and ideas in the University environment, both in professional training at different cycles and in extracurricular student life.
